The Baptism of Christ

Relief above the entrance to the baptistery
Cathedral of St. Lawrence, Trogir, Croatia

All the basics of Baptism of Christ iconography are here: the angel with the towel or garment, the dove, John pouring from a cup, the river, and the dove. A date in the late-medieval period or later is suggested by classicizing touches such as the angels' flowing robes and curly hair and John's securing his mantle with his left hand, toga-style. Also noteworthy are the very shallow water and the outsize Father surrounded by angels.
